The Ivinghoe branch of WEA has been providing courses locally since 1950. If you would like a chance to help choose future courses, or would like to present a course yourself, call David Hammond on 01296 662328.

Autumn Term 2006
Railways of the Chilterns Roger Bowen
A course looking at the development of railways in the Chilterns from the first lines in the 1830’s to the present day, including their effects on the local economy and society. Fully illustrated, also discussion and debate.

Six meetings on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 to 9.00pm starting on 19.09.06 at Pitstone Memorial Hall. Fee: £23.85*

Literature: Parents and Children.
Ann Severn
This course will look at novels illustrating the close bonds between parents and children, as well as the many trials and tribulations. The course will use a selection of 19th and 20th century fiction that movingly tells of family life in many countries: Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mocking Bird’; ‘Father and Son’ by Edmund Gosse; ‘Fathers and Sons’ by Turgenev, Virginia Woolf’s ‘To The Lighthouse’ and ‘Cry the Beloved Country’ by Alan Paton.

Ten meetings on Friday mornings from 10.00am until 12 noon starting on 22.09.06 at Ivinghoe Library. Fee: £53.00*

Ways of Knowing Dr Caroline Ellwood
An exploration of how we know that something is true. Discussion will focus around evidence, perception, memory, proof, divine revelation, authority and reasoning. Plays, poems, political statements and versions of history will be used as a starting point.

Six meetings on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 to 9.00pm starting on 01.11.06 at Pitstone Memorial Hall. Fee £23.85*

Spring 2007:

Talking Turner Dean Hines
The course will look at the life and works of J.M.W.Turner, the most prolific landscape painter of his generation. Students will be introduced to his paintings, his practices and the social, political and cultural background that shaped his work. This course includes a visit to the Turner Collection at Tate Britain.

Six meetings on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 to 9.00pm starting on 16.01.07 at Pitstone Memorial Hall plus a visit to Tate Britain. Fee £27.85 *
Literature- Parents & Children
Ann Severn
Continuing the theme from the Autumn class, covering ‘A Tale of Love and Darkness’ by Amos Oz, ‘Washington Square’ by Henry James, ‘East of Eden’ by John Steinbeck, ‘The Namesake’ by Jhumpa Lahiri and ‘The Kite Runner’ by K Hosseini.

Ten meetings on Friday mornings at Ivinghoe Library from 10.00am to 12 noon starting 19.01.07. Fee £53

History of the City of London John Oliver
This course covers the history of London since Roman times and traces the progress through the centuries. Aspects of political, economic, social and religious life will be considered, to enable a better understanding of how London works today.

Five meetings on Tuesdays from 7.30 to 9.00pm at Pitstone Memorial Hall starting on 27.02.07 plus an outing to London.
Fee £23.85

* Fees: All WEA courses are FREE to people who receive a means tested benefit or job-seekers allowance, and to their unwaged dependents.
However, a registration fee of £2.00 will be charged, payable at the first meeting
